NLP, MBTI: two psychology tools for managers!

Psychology and management have a deep relationship that we don’t necessarily suspect. The study of employees’ behaviors and “mental processes” can be very useful in order to find THE method to boost them, so here are two tools developed by psychologists to manage your teams!

 

Management and psychology: two intimately linked concepts

Opinions differ on the subject of psychology. Disdained by some, honored by others, this discipline focuses on people’s behaviors and their way of thinking, which can be very useful for a manager! In his book “Psychology of the manager to better succeed at work”, Patrick Amar, a former banker turned psychologist coach, highlights three courses of psychology that are an integral part of any management strategy. Clinical psychology places managers in front of themselves and helps them understand the impact of their emotions, thoughts and behaviour on the way they lead their teams. Social psychology, on the other hand, focuses on the mechanisms of influence, the need for conformity or persuasive communication. This branch represents a major asset in understanding the functioning of a team and allows, in fact, to adapt its management strategies. The author obviously cites work psychology, a complementary element that focuses on questions of motivation, leadership development and the constitution of a high-performance group. As an example of application, the author evokes the “self-fulfilling prophecies” defined by social psychology. This mental process leads a person to look at another according to their beliefs and not objectively: “So if I think that a new employee is not good, I risk investing less in them, giving them less feedback, less recognition, less access to training… which will indeed risk discouraging him and not realizing his potential. ” he explains. Psychology is therefore insidiously part of all communication, and a manager who knows how to use it will be more likely to convince and motivate his team.
