Focus on the job of interim manager

Whether it is a question of the definition of interim management, the reasons for using it or the type of companies that use it, the steps, or the market in France, WAYDEN tells you more about the subject.

What is interim management?

The purpose of interim management is to temporarily outsource the top management and management of a department or organization to an external professional, specialized in the subject (who will be called the interim manager or the consultant). Thus, rather than hiring a senior executive on a permanent contract, this solution makes it possible to find a manager who is immediately operational, and dedicated to a very specific transition mission.

The missions of the interim manager generally concern operational projects for the transformation of companies (restructuring, recovery, digitalization, reorganization, etc.), crisis management (managerial emergency, crisis management) and change management. Temporary management can be offered as part of specialized project management, change management or emergency leadership. It is therefore not to be confused with time-sharing or temporary work as it is conceived in traditional temporary employment agencies.

The interim management market in France

The French interim management market has been growing rapidly for the past 4 years.

The need for companies to rely on experienced profiles (for time-limited needs) for change management, crisis transition management, business transformation or relay management operations, explains the success of this sector with large groups but also SMEs, start-ups, subsidiaries, etc. or ETIs (type of company-client majority of EMTs – 39.4% according to France Transition).

Similarly, the ability to bring a fresh perspective encourages the use of outsourcing this type of management.

Examples of interim management assignments

Our interim management firm has created a whole section dedicated to case studies with concrete examples of interim management missions for various issues: takeover of general management, replacement of an HR Director, Plant Manager for a business turnaround, Supply Chain Director, Financial Director, Sales Director, etc.

You will find on the ” Our successes ” page, all of our missions carried out with no doubt a problem similar to yours.

In 2024, according to the barometer of interim management companies by France Transition on the market, the most common types of assignments are: bridge management (46% of the activity), project management (22%), change management (20%) and crisis/turnaround (9%).

You can also find examples of interventions that can be carried out by interim managers in our blog articles.

The cost of an interim manager

The price of an interim manager depends on several parameters. The manager’s technical and interpersonal skills are important elements, but they are not the only ones. The sector of activity and the urgency of the mission can also affect the cost of the mission, as can the duration.

The cost of an interim management mission is estimated to be between 30% and 40% more expensive than the same permanent position. However, it offers flexibility, follow-up and is much more expensive than a consulting mission.

The qualities of a good interim manager

The interim manager is a special profile. Curiosity, humility, responsiveness but also audacity, leadership and pragmatism are generally among the qualities of these executives, who often have to deal with complex situations.

The culture of results and performance is generally in the DNA of the good manager and he must be able to withstand high levels of stress to carry out his mission (sometimes at short notice). In any case, it is on these criteria that we rigorously select our interim managers, so that they can perfectly respond to the missions entrusted to us by our clients.

Depending on the profile sought by the client company (interim manager, interim manager, interim manager, interim project manager, interim leader, etc.), the managerial qualities required may vary.

Which sectors make the most use of EMTs?

The Activity Barometer of the French Federation of Interim Management Actors, France Transition, published on 14/02/2025, shows that the industrial sector remains predominant but is declining (49% of interim management assignments and a substantial drop of 7% at the end of 2024).

The same applies to the Services, which now represent only 17% of the missions. Together, these two sectors accounted for nearly 3/4 of the executive management temporary employment market and are now at 2/3.

What are the most sought-after jobs?

Still according to the same study, the profiles of experienced managers who are most in demand concern interim CFOs and the accounting function (26.9%) with an emphasis on management control, interim HR directors (14.4%), industrial management (14%), specialized purchasing managers (9.2%), CEOs & general management (8.2%), and interim IT departments with the boom in corporate projects related to information systems such as HRIS.

In H1 2024, the share allocated to CFOs and CIOs remains the same.

The positions of interim industry directors gained 2.1% (16.1%). Demand for transitional DGs jumped by +2.9% (11.7%).

On the other hand, the EMT market is down less on the HR side (-4.5%) and on the Purchasing Managers (-1.6%) side.

The missions generally last between 6 and 18 months. Between the start of the transition mission and the end of the missions, the average duration is 7 to 9 months according to France Transition.

What are the skills of interim managers?

Their ability to lead, transform and align organizations allows companies to move quickly, without compromising on requirements. By relying on this expertise, management secures their decisions and accelerates execution.

Under which contract can an interim manager be involved?

The implementation of an interim manager is also facilitated by the flexibility of the contracts, in particular thanks to wage portage which allows managers to work as freelancers while benefiting from the advantages of an employee. This formula offers legal and administrative security while meeting the specific needs of companies.
