With a growth of +19% in 2018 (Source: FNMT Barometer, 2019), the interim management market is on the rise. More and more companies are therefore using this managerial outsourcing solution to support themselves during a crucial period. We take stock of the type of companies using interim management, according to which sectors of activity, and in what cases.
Who is interim management for?
Interim management is aimed at all companies, regardless of their size or sector of activity.
Thus, startups, SMEs, large groups, but also local authorities and associations may be required to request the services of an interim manager, regardless of the problem encountered by the organization (performance improvement, restructuring, internationalization, crisis management, etc.).
At WAYDEN, we cover a very wide range of sectors, allowing all types of companies to request the services of our experienced managers and executives (banking and insurance, retail, construction, industry, etc.).

What types of companies use interim management?
According to the study conducted by the FNMT in 2018, mid-sized companies (€50 to €1,500 million turnover) are the main customers of interim managers, and represent 32% of the activity.
23% of assignments are approved by large French companies (>€1,500 million turnover), and 20% are required by international groups.
On the other hand, nearly half of the companies using interim management are located in Ile-de-France (49%), and 12% in Auvergne Rhône-Alpes.
Finally, 62% of interim management assignments are carried out with companies that have already used this system at least once in the past.
Which sectors use interim management?
Specialized interim managers are able to intervene within very targeted sectors of activity. They therefore have extensive industry expertise and in-depth knowledge of the company’s trade. Certain areas of activity are particularly in demand.
Thus, according to the National Federation of Interim Management, the sector of activity that makes the most use of this mode of managerial outsourcing is industry, which accounts for 51% of assignments. Services represent 19% of missions.
What are the most sought-after areas of intervention?
On the other hand, the interim manager can intervene to take control of a specific department within the company. Here again, certain trends are emerging. Thus, the areas of intervention most popular with companies using interim management are:
- CFO (Chief Financial Officer) functions, which come out on top with 21% of assignments;
- 18% are industrial departments ;
- 16% for HR missions ;
- 10% in Supply Chain ;
- 10% in CIO (Chief Information Officer);
- Only 4% of assignments are dedicated to sales and marketing functions.
When do companies use interim management?
While interim management was traditionally favoured by companies in the context of crisis management or a recovery in activity (decline in growth, company restructuring, etc.), these cases now only concern 10% of assignments.
The vast majority of interventions are dedicated to the management of large-scale projects and change management (57% of assignments). 32% of the interventions concern gap management, i.e. the emergency replacement of a manager or executive who has left his or her position.
